SHAH ALAM: Opposition-linked NGO, Jingga 13, today urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to reopen its case on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and former subsidiary SRC International Sdn Bhd.
This was based on ‘new evidence’ reported by whistleblower site Sarawak Report (SR) that claimed Prime Minister Najib Razak had paid lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah a sum of RM9.5 million from 1MDB funds.
Jingga 13 vice coordinator Mikhael Iskhandaar said Shafee, who acted as the prosecutor in the appeal against Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy II trial, was very close to Najib and was said to have received payment twice from the premier.
He said the case should be reopened by the MACC since there has been no denial or even any form of reaction from both Najib and Shafee in regards to the claims made by Sarawak Report.
“This means that other documents involving Najib and 1MDB/SRC funds should be reopened and MACC must investigate this further.
“Jingga 13 urge MACC not to keep quiet and face the people if no actions are to be taken against Najib despite these information clearly stated that there is a strong basis for the case to be reopened,” he said at the Selangor MACC office today
He was speaking to reporters after lodging a report at the commission.
“Recently MACC has been doing a very good job in exposing high profile cases. So we hope the same will be done on this case,” he said.
On May 31, Sarawak Report published an article titled ‘Najib paid Anwar’s prosecutor RM9.5 million from 1MDB slush fund. Why?’, where the site had named Shafee as the fund receiver.
It was also reported on Sarawak Report that Najib had paid Shafee RM4,300,000 on Sept 11, 2013, and RM5,200,000 on Feb 17, 2014 from his AmBank private account.
On January 2016, Attorney-General Mohamad Apandi Ali announced that there were no misappropriation involved with the said account hence closing the investigations on 1MDB.
